About Simferopol
Simferopol is the capital of Crimea. It is its scientific, commercial and cultural center. It is the largest and one of the most beautiful cities on the peninsula and has all the components needed for both leisure and educational tourism. It is located in the heart of Crimea, near the valley of the Sagir River. Since all roads leading to Crimea go through Simferopol, it is called the "Gate of Crimea". It is from this capital that guests begin to discover the peninsula.
The history of the city began at the end of the 18th century. In 1771, as a result of the Russian victory in the Russo-Turkish War, Crimea was given to Russia. At that time, Empress Catherine the Great ordered the construction of a city that would become the center of the lands conquered from the Turks.
Construction began in 1784 near the small town of Aqmescit, which was the seat of QalÄ-Sultan, the Khan's right-hand man. The buildings were built from the ruins of Scythian Naples (Neapolis), the capital of the ancient Scythian state, which stood on the site of Simferopol as early as the 3rd century BC.
The new city that absorbed Aqmescit was named Simferopol, Greek for "city of utility" or "city of the gatherer". The Crimean capital owes its name – as well as its appearance – to Catherine the Great, who established the tradition of giving southern cities Greek names in memory of the Greek colonies that once stood there.
In the following years, the population of Simferopol grew, and the city itself began to develop many monuments. Both monuments were built during the reign of Nicholas the First. Today, these architectural gems, along with other places of historical and architectural importance, contribute to the heritage of Simferopol and explain why the city is considered one of the most attractive places in Crimea.
The capital of Crimea is the best place to start discovering the unique beauty and rich history of the peninsula. One of the largest and most interesting museums on the peninsula is located here - the Tavrida Central Museum, whose extensive collection depicts the centuries-old history of Crimea, the culture of the local population and the great nature of the region.
Numerous ancient and medieval buildings also testify to the history of this city. The main archaeological monument in Simferopol is the Skythian Naples reserve, created on the territory of an ancient settlement. The most interesting element of the complex is the mausoleum of the Scythian aristocrats, which is stunning in its luxury and complexity. The oldest building in Simferopol is the Kebir-Jami Mosque, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is particularly interesting and remarkable.
Unfortunately, many travelers who use Simferopol only as a stopover on their way to the sea do not deserve the Crimean capital.
